Illinois Legal Aid Online

Illinois Legal Aid Online (ILAO) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to "increase access to justice for lower-income and vulnerable Illinois residents through the innovative use of technology to assist and educate the public and to train and support legal aid providers and pro bono attorneys." One way we accomplish this mission is through our award winning website, www.IllinoisLegalAid.org, which provides the public with user-friendly legal information in 24 areas of law, including information about legal rights and responsibilities, self-help instructions, interactive court forms, multimedia public education classes, and referrals to free and low cost legal services.

ILAO provides disadvantaged, elderly and disabled individuals across the state with the online resources they need to successfully resolve many legal problems on their own if they can’t afford a lawyer. There are approximately 3,000 legal resources available on the website, which allows people to easily get the information they need so they can better advocate for themselves and, as a result, obtain better outcomes to their legal issues. There are many common legal problems that people can successfully resolve by themselves as long as they have access to accurate, timely information.

ILAO created the public website for people seeking low-cost or free legal assistance. By using a powerful search engine on the homepage, users can find pertinent information in 24 areas of law.

The ILAO website provides lower-income and vulnerable Illinois residents with:

  • Easy to access information about their legal rights and responsibilities
  • Quick referrals to free and low cost legal aid offices
  • Pro se forms for self-representation if necessary
  • Self-help instructions for common legal problems

Each year hundreds of thousands of individuals access online legal information and self-help resources through our website, and as result, they are better able to resolve their legal problems even though they cannot afford a lawyer. People can access the website anywhere they can get online
